About the event

The Four Chaplains Ceremony commemorates four US Army chaplains—a Methodist, a Catholic, a Jewish Rabbi, and a Dutch Reformed minister—who sacrificed their lives on the sinking USS Dorchester in 1943 by giving their life vests to soldiers, symbolizing selfless service and interfaith unity, with ceremonies held annually around February 3rd (Four Chaplains Day) by groups like the American Legion, featuring prayers, retelling their story, and promoting unity.
